Peter is the Democratic candidate that can beat Brian Dubie and win in November. Peter is the best candidate to lead Vermont out of the recession as he understands that we can’t tax or cut our way out and that we need our focus to be on economic development. I support Peter Shumlin because he has an intimate knowledge of how Vermont works and what it needs to succeed. Peter grew up in Southern Vermont with his brother and sister, and now owns his own small business. Because of this longtime experience as a small business owner, Peter actually understands the stress that employers are under to create jobs and meet a payroll. Frankly, a business perspective is exactly what Vermont needs right now. We need someone who has actually balanced a budget and created good paying jobs at the helm of state government. Peter is exactly the kind of person I want as Governor to attract young people back to this state so we can start our own small businesses, raise a family and join the work force.

I support Peter because of not what he has already done for Vermont, but more importantly, his vision for Vermont’s future. As President of the Vermont Senate for over a decade Peter led the charge to pass marriage equality over Governor Douglass’ veto and shut down the aging Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant. Peter understands the need to grow the green economy because of his experience as a small business owner which sets him apart from his fellow candidates. I believe in his vision that renewable energy is more than just a necessity, but a growing industry that Vermont can capitalize on to create good jobs. He made smart decisions about controversial issues during his tenure as Senate President, such as passing marriage equality, climate change legislation that Al Gore called the “toughest” in the country and shutting down Vermont Yankee. As a small business owner, Peter knows what it takes to create good jobs for Vermonters so that young people like me can stay in Vermont and make a living after graduation. More importantly, his work to lower the cost of prescription drugs and also not take any money from the pharmaceutical companies sets him apart from his fellow Democrats as the best candidate to stand up for working Vermonters.
